On March 2, 2013, Mr. Tao Zhu, the Deputy Master of Block A, gave a talk “The Spaces of Others” to share his experience of working as a designer and scholar on three architectural projects. Tao’s talk formally launched Block A’s monthly program A Salon Series.

A-Salon Autumn Series: Mapping the Mosaic – An Exploration of Hong Kong’s History and Culture

Professor Leo LEE explores the colonial past of Hong Kong in order to shed light on the island’s extraordinary cultural identity. Rather than offering a historical survey, Prof. Lee presents a mosaic or “melange” of our city drawn from his research and observations. The talk will be an exposition of his book City Between Worlds: My Hong Kong, 2008.

Professor John Carroll looked at how Hong Kong’s unique colonial past has shaped its equally distinctive, sometimes even bizarre, present. About the speaker: Professor John Carroll is professor of history and Associate Dean (Outreach) of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong. His celebrated works include Edge of Empires: Chinese Elites and British Colonials in Hong Kong and A Concise History of Hong Kong.
