Prof. Ying Chan
Master of Shun Hing College, Professor Ying Chan, is an award-winning journalist, educator, and e-learning advocate.
She was the founding director (1998-2016) of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of HKU, and currently serves as Honorary Professor of HKU’s Technology-Enriched Learning Initiative, consulting and helping to promote e-learning.
She was also the founding dean (2003-2011) of the journalism school at Shantou University in mainland China.
She consults often for local and international media, startups, and educational institutions. Her public services include serving as board member of the Media Development Loan Fund, an investment fund for independent media worldwide; the Global Reporting Centre at the University of British Columbia and the Digital Asia Hub. She is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Information and Entertainment. From 2012-2017, she chairs the founding advisory panel of the Community Involvement Broadcasting Service, a pioneering program of RTHK, Hong Kong’s public broadcaster.
Chan’s honours include a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, a George Polk Award for journalistic excellence and an International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists, and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Asian American Journalists Association, USA.

Dr. Tao Zhu
Deputy Master Tao Zhu is Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Department of Architecture. He received his Master of Architecture and PhD in Architecture History and Theory at Columbia University.
He conducts his architectural practice in China and writes on contemporary Chinese architecture and urbanism. He has published essays in AA Files, AD, a+u, Bauwelt, Domusand Time + Architecture. His book Liang Sicheng and His Times (Guilin; Beijing: 2014) examines Chinese architectural development in relation to Mao Zedong’s sociopolitical campaigns during the 1950s.
Dr. Zhu received the Architectural Critics Award 2010 from the China Architecture Media Awards organized by China’s mass media Southern Metropolis Daily in collaboration with eight major Chinese architectural magazines.
Dr. Frank Zhu
Senior Resident Tutor
Senior Tutor Frank Zhu is a Research Project Manager in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. His research aims to uncover the neural bases of implicit/explicit motor skills learning and performance, as well as how to capitalize on these bases in order to enhance learning and performance of motor skills. He applies his research to a range of different domains (e.g., sports, surgery, dentistry, and motor rehabilitation) and populations (e.g., adults, surgeons, dentists, children, elderly, and patients with movement disorders). He employs behavioural training interventions, psychometric measures, neuroimaging and non-invasive neuromodulation techniques to address his research aims.
